Character Perspective - Polonius
This Morning I spoke with my servant, Reynaldo, about sending money and written letters from myself to Laertes in France. Also i told Reynaldo to spy on my son's personal life while he was over there because i am very worried about him and i do not trust him over there in France. As Reynaldo left my presence, my sweet daughter, Ophelia, came crying into my chambers. I asked her what was wrong and she told me the Hamlet has gone mad. She also said that he was in some sort of trance and would not speak but only hold my dear Ophelia and stare into her eyes. I believe Hamlet is mad with love for my daughter. That seems like the only true explanation for his actions. I must go tell the King, Claudius, about his nephews most recent actions.
When I entered the throne room, Cornelius and Voltimand walked in explaining the the Norwegians, behind Prince Fortinbras need safe passage through Denmark to attack the Poles. Claudius agrees with those terms and sends the ambassadors on their way. I then speak to Claudius and Gertrude about how strange Hamlet is acting around everyone, especially Ophelia. I told them of a plan to spy on Hamlet and to observe his actions so we are sure that he has gone crazy. Claudius and Gertrude agree that we should spy on him and have Rosencrantz and Guildenstern follow him around and be friends with him to try and decrease his mourning for the loss of his father. Gertrude even told R and G that hamlet has "too much changed" (II,ii,36) and he needs help. After that, Hamlet comes in just as everyone leaves and I try to speak with him about Ophelia. That idiot called me a "Fishmonger"!!! (II,ii,39) and then proceeded to answer my questions about his love for Ophelia irrationally. He leaves and then Rosencrantz and Guildenstern stay behind where I tell them that they really need to keep an eye on Hamlet and they agree. Now I am working on the Play for the Castle. Hopefully it will turn out better than my predictions.
